Carnation
(Dianthus caryophyllus)

—Common Names:—
Jove's Flower
Pinks
Gillies
Gilliflower

Carnation is the flower of January,
and the scarlet carnation is the state flower of Ohio.

According to Christian legend, carnations first appeared on Earth while Jesus was carrying the cross.  Mary saw him and began to cry and carnations sprang up from where her tears fell.  The pink carnation became the symbol of a mother's undying love, and in 1907 was chosen as the emblem of Mother's Day, now observed in the United States and Canada on the second Sunday in May.
You wear a red flower if your mother is still alive or a white one if she has died.

In Korea, a young girl's fortune is told by placing three carnations in her hair.  If the top flower dies first, her last years of life will be difficult; if it's the middle flower, her earlier years will bring the most grief.  And if the bottom flower dies first, she will be miserable her entire life!

President McKinley wore a Lamborn Red carnation boutonniere constantly, calling it his good luck flower.  At the White House, it was his custom to present each guest with a carnation from an ever-present bouquet on his desk.  It appears he gave his luck away on September 14, 1901.  At the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY, he took the boutonniere from his lapel and gave it to a 12-year-old admirer.  Moments later, he was killed by an assassin's bullet.

The scarlet (red) carnation was named the state flower of Ohio on
February 3, 1904.
