(many more)

Violet is the flower of February,
and the state flower of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

Medieval Christians believed violets were once strong, upright flowers until the day, the shadow of the cross fell upon them on Mount Calvary.  Forever after they bowed in shame at what man had done.  Napoleon Bonaparte loved violets.  When he married Josephine, she wore violets.  Every year on their anniversary, he sent her a violet bouquet.  When Napoleon died, a locket was found around his neck.  It contained violets he had picked from Josephine's tomb.  The French thus chose the violet as their emblem, and Napoleon was nicknamed Corporal Violet or Le Pere Violet

The name Hearts Ease stems from its old use as a medicine to treat heart disease.  The ancient Persians and Greeks used the violet to heal the heart and the head.  An infusion of violets in hot water helped to ease a broken heart.  It is said that a garland of violets worn about the head prevents drunkenness.  Greeks used the plants to help induce sleep, and to calm anger.  The violet's use as a medicine has been extensive.  Certain violets have been use as pain relievers; they are among the few plants to contain salicylic acid, the chief ingredient in aspirin.  Violets have even been used in the treatment for cancer.

Violets, which contain sugar, have found their way into the culinary world.  The flowers are crystallized and served as candy or as cake decorations.  The flowers have also been used as food dye in candy-making.  The deep purple Violet, native of the Mediterranean region, is so sweet that the oil from it is used in the perfume industry.

It is said that to dream of violets is a promise of advancement in life.
Violets are considered a good luck gift, but where violets bloom in autumn, epidemics will follow within the year.

Violets are a symbol of Faithfulness, Modesty and Innocence.

Blue violets say "I'll always be true".
White violets depict modesty and the desire to take a chance on happiness.
Yellow violets convey modest worth and rural happiness.
